How Instagram aspect ratios compare

Instagram aspect ratios at the same width: 1.91:1, 1:1, 4:5, 3:4, 9:161.91:11:14:53:49:16
Same width, different heights: in the feed, 4:5 and 3:4 photos take more vertical space than 1:1 or 1.91:1. 9:16 fills the screen in Stories and Reels.

What does the Story and Reel safe-zone overlay show?

With a 9:16 preset selected you can switch on an optional overlay. It shades the areas Meta's ads guide asks advertisers to keep clear in paid Story and Reels placements: roughly the top 14%, the bottom 35% and 6% on each side.

Treat it as a conservative aid, not an organic Instagram rule. Instagram's own buttons and captions vary by placement, device, account and app version, so check your post in the app before publishing. The overlay is never added to the image you download.

For framing tips, see the Instagram safe zone and focal point guide.

Questions about cropping photos for Instagram

Common questions about cropping images for social media and web.

How do I crop images for Instagram?
Upload your image and select an Instagram preset: Square (1080×1080) for feed posts, Portrait 4:5 (1080×1350) or 3:4 (1080×1440) for vertical posts, Landscape (1080×566) for wide shots, or the 9:16 export (1080×1920) for Stories and Reels. Use zoom and position controls to frame your image perfectly.
What is the focal point feature?
The focal point lets you mark the most important part of your image. When cropping to different aspect ratios, the crop will center around your focal point, ensuring the key subject stays visible. This is especially useful when creating multiple crops for different platforms.
Can I crop images on my phone?
Yes! SnapCompress is fully mobile-friendly with touch gesture support. Pinch to zoom, drag to reposition, and tap presets to quickly switch aspect ratios. The responsive design works great on phones, tablets, and desktops.
What aspect ratios are available?
We offer 20+ presets including Instagram (Square, Portrait 4:5 and 3:4, Landscape, Story, Profile), Facebook (Post, Cover), Twitter (Post, Header), LinkedIn, YouTube Thumbnail, Pinterest Pin, TikTok, plus standard ratios like 16:9, 4:3, 3:2, and free-form cropping.
Does cropping reduce image quality?
Cropping itself doesn't reduce quality - we use high-quality canvas rendering with 92% quality output. However, cropping a small area from a large image means fewer pixels in the output. For best results, start with high-resolution source images.
Can I rotate images while cropping?
Yes! Use the Rotate button to rotate your image in 90-degree increments. This is useful for fixing orientation issues or creating creative compositions.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No! All image processing happens entirely in your browser using Canvas API. Your images never leave your device, ensuring complete privacy. This also means faster processing with no upload/download time.
What image formats are supported?
You can crop JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC (iPhone) and DNG photos. JPEG, PNG and WebP keep their format. HEIC and DNG are exported as JPEG, because browsers cannot save those formats.
Is the Story safe-zone overlay an official Instagram rule?
No. The overlay follows Meta's guidance for paid Story and Reels ads (keep key content out of roughly the top 14%, the bottom 35% and 6% on each side). It is a conservative aid only: organic Instagram overlays vary by placement, device, account and app version. The overlay is never added to your downloaded image.
How do I use the grid overlay?
The rule-of-thirds grid helps with composition. Align key subjects along the grid lines or at their intersections for more visually appealing crops. Toggle the grid on/off using the Grid button.
Can I save my crop settings?
Crop settings last for the current session: the crop position and zoom stay until you add a new image. To start from a specific size, bookmark a preset link such as /crop?preset=instagram-portrait for 4:5 posts.
